Action Alert: Hunting Over Bait

Sunday, September 05, 2010

Hunting Over Bait

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

We need your help today to keep shooting over bait illegal in Georgia.

Background

Attempts are being made to change the law in Georgia to legalize shooting deer over bait. The state is asking for public opinion on this matter during the next several months. We need you to speak out against baiting.

Baiting is defined as the placement of food, not grown on site, to attract, lure or entice deer to aid in harvesting. Baiting is different from supplemental feeding, which is defined as the placement of food to increase nutritional intake of deer. The current law allows a hunter to hunt within the vicinity of supplemental feed if the hunter is at least 200 yards away from and not within sight of the feed. The Georgia Wildlife Federation supports supplemental feeding, but is opposed to changing the law to allow shooting over bait. We support the current laws as they stand today.

Hunting Over Bait

Dear Lt. Governor Cagle

As a Georgia sportsman, I oppose any attempts to legalize shooting whitetail deer over bait. I support fair chase hunting standards.

Shooting over bait is not the sportsman's values that I want passed on to my children and grandchildren. Shooting over bait is not good public policy for Georgia and could threaten the health of Georgia's deer herd and other wildlife. Please maintain or strengthen the current law of 200 yards and out of site to hunt in the vicinity of bait.
