Please vote YES on SB 299
I am your constituent and an active voter.
As the bill’s primary sponsor, Sen. Gooch has agreed to offer a floor amendment when SB 299 comes up for a vote that:
• Makes it mandatory for watershed protection planners to take into account buffer areas, land development densities and land use activities; change ‘may’ to ‘shall’.
• Requires watershed protection plans be approved by the department.
With these changes, please support SB 299 and Vote Yes. I stand with the Georgia Wildlife Federation and Georgia Trout Unlimited supporting this floor amendment. Without these changes, please Vote No.
Georgia’s creeks, rivers, and lakes are special. Trout waters are of particular importance to me. Current Georgia law protects these resources and their existing uses by requiring consideration of buffer areas along streams and reservoirs, land development densities, and land use activities in the minimum standards set in Department of Natural Resources regulations.
As passed in committee, SB 299 proposes to roll-back these protections. It tells watershed protection planners that they ‘may’ take into account buffer areas, land development densities and land use activities. These are the three most effective factors protecting water quality. The committee substitute also removed a provision requiring GA EPD to approve watershed protection plans.
Thank you in advance.
